Your Post-Move To-Do List

If you’ve just finished moving into your new place, congratulations — the hardest part is over. But don’t get settled in just yet, there are a few things you need to do to ensure a smooth and complete transition. In today’s post, moving company Tiger Moving & Storage shares a to-do list of the things you need to do after you’ve moved in.

Inspect Delivered Boxes

The first task on your agenda should be to make sure all your boxes are accounted for. Check each box against your inventory and make sure they’re in the same condition as they were loaded into the moving truck. If you notice signs of damage, document it by taking pictures in case you need to file an insurance claim.

Get Your Utilities Up and Running

You’ll want to make sure that your new place has all the basics — electricity, water, gas, internet and HVAC — before you settle in. Contact local providers if utilities are not yet set up or if you’re experiencing issues. We recommend doing this as soon as you’ve arrived, or while your expert movers are unloading your items, so you’ll have plenty of time to have it resolved before sundown.

Unpack Essentials First

You can’t expect to have all of your things set up on your first day, so your priority should be unpacking essential items such as bedding, toiletries and basic kitchenware. Set up your bedroom and bathroom first so you can be comfortable after a long day of moving. It’s a lot easier to focus and tackle the rest of the unpacking when you’ve eaten and showered.

Secure Your New Home

Not to sound like an alarmist, but you should make sure your new home is secure before you settle down for the night. Make sure all the windows are locked and install smoke detectors if they are not already in place. Security is particularly important not just for protection from forced entry, but also from wildlife that may wander into your property.

Locate Emergency Points

Set aside a few minutes to familiarize yourself with the main control points, such as the fuse box, main water valve, fire extinguisher and the exits. You can never tell when an emergency may arise. Make sure everyone in the household knows these locations and how to operate essential equipment if needed.

Update Your Mailing Address

Homeowners often forget to update their mailing addresses, which often results in mail being delivered to the old place. If you have packages and mailpieces en route to your old address, make arrangements with the local post office to hold or reroute your mail. It will be a minor inconvenience, but it’s far better than dealing with lost mail. Make sure that organizations that you receive mail from, from your banks, insurance and healthcare providers, to your online shopping accounts are also updated to reflect the new address.
