They will make your moving process easier for you. Obtaining multiple estimates from different companies can help you determine which one is right for the job.

Keep reading to learn things you need to know about moving estimates.

Types of Moving Estimates

Binding Moving Estimates

Home movers that provide a binding estimate are obligated to honor the initial price unless there are changes. The final price should be the same as the binding estimate if you only moved the items stated on the inventory sheet.

Nonbinding Moving Estimates

In a nonbinding estimate, the quote is just a rough calculation of your moving cost. The mover will calculate the price by the weight of the shipment and the services you need. You can expect your actual bill to go higher than the non-bidding moving estimate. However, your mover may only ask you to pay up to 110% of the quote when they deliver your stuff. You will then have to pay the remaining costs later.

Binding-Not-to-Exceed Moving Estimate

This estimate is essentially the same as a binding estimate. However, you’ll have to pay less than the initial quote if your items weigh less.

How Movers Usually Determine Costs

Movers usually calculate costs according to the distance of the move. For instance, a local move is typically charged by the hour, depending on how many movers there are. Additional charges for extra services may still apply to the per-hour estimate. On the other hand, if you are moving long-distance or across the country, you may get a quote based on the weight of your shipment, the distance of the move, and labor costs.

Other factors can also affect your moving cost, such as if you require extra services. If the moving process is challenging, these charges may also apply. Moreover, think twice before hiring a company that asks you to sign blank or incomplete documents. As much as possible, work with a mover that charges based on weight. When obtaining quotes, ask the company to provide a complete list of everything it will move.
