Should You be Wary of Lowball Moving Estimates?

Moving can be costly, which is why a low estimate can be so tempting. However, as the saying goes, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. In today’s post, the moving experts at Tiger Moving & Storage discuss why lowball moving estimates are a red flag.

How to Recognize Lowball Moving Estimates

Movers may have different reasons for offering a lowball price, but the objective is the same: they want to get clients to sign up as soon as possible, without asking too many questions. This usually means the movers in question have something to hide — inexperience or a history of poor service, to name a few. On the other hand, a mover may be offering a legitimately low price. To identify which is which, keep an eye out for the following red flags:

  • Unclear language and hidden fees. Make it a habit to read and scrutinize everything. Reputable movers will provide an estimate in plain language, with a detailed breakdown of all costs associated with your move including fees that may be required.
  • Pressure tactics. If a mover seems like they’re leaning into you to get you to sign as soon as possible, consider it a red flag. Ideally, you should be given ample time to review an estimate, keeping in mind that once you sign it, it becomes a contract. Phrases like “get this price if you sign today” is a  typical pressure tactic.
  • Not asking for details. Keep track of your conversation with the mover’s representative: have they asked you for details about your move, like how many items you are moving or what type of services you need? It could be a sign that they’re more interested in your signature, instead of providing you good service.

How to Avoid Lowball Estimates

Finding a reliable mover can take some work, and there is a chance that you will encounter — and waste time with — several lowballers in your search. To save time, spend a few minutes researching the prospective movers, paying attention to reviews, customer feedback, and physical business addresses.

Once you’ve reached out to prospective movers and received estimates, don’t just settle for the one with the lowest price — take the time to compare them. Ask the movers for at least three references and make the time to call them. Past customers can provide invaluable insight on the quality of a mover’s service.
