Common Myths About Moving Companies

Moving can be a stressful endeavor. It doesn’t help that there are a lot of common misconceptions about moving companies, which can make people even more anxious about the prospect of moving.

To help you plan a smoot hand stress-free move, moving experts from Tiger Moving & Storage debunk these common myths about moving companies.

MYTH 1: All Moving Companies Are Basically the Same

Moving companies offer many different services, operations, products and customer experiences. What you get for your money can vary widely from company to company. This can be particularly tricky when comparing various moving quotes. The best thing to do is make sure everything is clearly outlined in your quote, such as valuation, packing materials, timeline, among other things. You might also want to read the online reviews of your prospective moving company.

MYTH 2: It’s Cheaper To Move Yourself

You might think that the most economical option is to rent a moving truck. However, by doing so, you may end up with hidden expenses, such as the price of truck rental, fuel, packing supplies and more. For this reason, the total moving costs might end up the same, or more, when hiring professional home movers. To save money and time, you should consider hiring a moving company instead.

MYTH 3: Movers Will Move Anything

For legal or safety reasons, there may be items that professional movers can’t or won’t move. For instance, they might not move frozen food items, plants, hazardous materials (paint, etc.), explosives or ammunition, flammable items, valuables (jewelry, etc.) and pets. To avoid misunderstandings, you should consult your moving company regarding any restrictions on what they can move.

MYTH 4: Moving Coverage Plans Protect Everything

Movers are required to offer basic liability coverage by law. You get this automatically during transit. However, it’s important to note that this only covers $0.60 per pound per item. For expensive items and appliances, this may not be enough. As such, you should check your homeowner’s insurance policy to see if it covers your move. Be sure to review your coverage options and that you understand them.
