A Step-By-Step Guide To Packing Jewelry

Plates, glasses, and pictures aren’t the only fragile things to be concerned about when moving. In fact, you may find that your most precious items are much smaller than these items – so small that losing them is a bigger concern than breaking them. We are, of course, referring to your jewelry pieces.

Packing Jewelry

Packing jewelry to move isn’t hard, but it does require following some steps to keep it both findable and intact. Here is a guide to how to pack jewelry for moving or even just travel:

First, Take Inventory

Take inventory of all of your jewelry items before you start the packing process. As part of this, be sure to make a written list. This way, you can compare against it as you pack, and then compare again when you unpack. It’ll make it much easier to spot if anything has been overlooked or lost.

Decide Which Packing Methods to Use

Since jewelry comes in different shapes, forms, and sizes, the best way to pack jewelry for traveling depends on the details. Some things are small enough to fit inside of straws, while others can be packed in toilet paper rolls.

If you have necklaces and are concerned about them tangling together, you may want to string them through individual egg cartons. For this method, punch two holes in the carton top and have it “wear” the jeweled part (if there is one) inside of the carton. Clasp the necklace on the outside of the top. You can also put your necklaces in individual Ziploc bags.

Other ways to keep small items together include using buttons as earring holders. For this method, just use the holes in the buttons as “ear holes” for pierced earrings. Attaching items to business cards also works. You can poke earrings through them, put holes in the cards to attach necklaces, or just tape items to them.

When at home, many people put their jewelry into a bowl or other open containers for easy access. If you’re one of them, you have it easy. Just cover your entire container with high-quality cling wrap to seal everything inside, and then box.

If you already use an actual jewelry box, all you need to do is to secure all of the openings or drawers, and you’re all set.

Organize Your Jewelry

If you use a method other than your usual bowl or jewelry box, you should organize all of your jewelry. Plastic lunch bags are great for this. You can also use a travel jewelry case.

You May Need to Take Your Jewelry with You on Moving Day

In many cases, movers won’t handle highly expensive or sentimental items like jewelry. In this case, or if you’re worried, take it to your new home on your own.
